OBSERVATION OF THE DAY

What am I paying attention to?

Observation is an act of paying attention. From a cockroach walking across a floor, a man on the beach masturbating, talking about what may or may not be true, reflecting on self doubt, memory, and reality, these observations are the situations in a day which cause me to pause. It is in the smallest details that meaning exists. From my own observation I develop a sense of what life means to me. So what am I observing specifically.

Did I read proust? No or at least I didn’t think I did, but then I pick up the book and I’m reading about a scene and I think wow…how crazy is that, I’ve been there too, just like the characters in the book and then i thought wait a minute…did it happen to me? or did I read proust and think what happened in the book was my own real memory? Did what happen to me really happen?

Just exactly what is this cockroach doing?   Ok so I am in my studio late at night and a cockroach drops from a crack and runs straight over to me and sits down. Why has it come and sat down next to me? This makes me think of beaches, when I go to a beach and walk way out to be alone and then someone walks all the way over to me and puts their towel next to me. What is that? What is that human behavior and what is that cockroach doing?

Maybe a man whacking off on the beach is also a type of self care. I’m bicyling early in the morning along Venice beach LA. on the side of the path I see people doing yoga, and boot camp, I see a man jog past me, a woman in a wet suit carrying a surf board. I am moving slowly and I see tents on the beach and people at the outdoor bathrooms washing clothes, I see a man wrapped in a blanket and he is definitely doing what I think he is doing…and then I think well everyone is out in the morning doing something for themselves and so is this guy…its like a type of self care. he has no privacy, no home, this is his space and this is his need, so…

“I’ve never doubted my identity.” What’s that like?  I am talking to someone last week and they say, “I never doubted my identity” and I thought to myself wow…“What’s that like?” What is that like seriously, to wake up and know you have self worth, to never doubt yourself, to just be able to say, yeah this is me. So how did this even come up? It came up because I had a pile of drawings on a shelf and they asked “Why do you hide your drawings?” And as I tried to answer this question the subject of doubt came up and that doubt took the shape of shame, but why?
