ALEX NICHOLS
Alex Nichols, born in San Francisco, is a USA-based interdisciplinary artist whose work aims to bear witness to her life and decisions. With a disarming physicality, rigor, and humor, she wields language, performance, video, photography, painting, and installation to gain voice, meeting the resistance of her external contexts as well as her internal psychological landscape playfully.
Her current work combines installation, performance, and collaboration with sound artists in the form of a Pink Box hung in the redwood trees. Alex performs a woman’s passage from grief to self-empowerment in the contained space of a suspended pink Box. Pink represents joy yet carries a long history involving rigid forms of femininity. The box represents the societal boxes and preconditioned thinking of our histories that limit our actions. The redwood forest represents time and the external environment, and the interconnectedness to all things. Video and photography are also used.
Alex has exhibited and performed locally and internationally, working with renowned institutions, including the 18th Street Art Center in Los Angeles, Headlands Center For The Arts, Djerassi, Bamboo Curtain Studios in Taipei, SF Recology in San Francisco, and Minnesota Street Projects. She has also exhibited widely, participating in Art fairs, including ZONA MACO, Mexico City, MACO Museum of Contemporary art Oaxaca, and Art Miami. She holds a graduate writing degree from the California College of Arts.
Alex Nichols also worked in a full-time collaboration from 2015-2021 ALEXANDMUSHI: An artists collaboration b/w Alex Nichols & Mushi Wooseong James examining humanity’s central theme: connection.
Alex Nichols founded the San Francisco Think Make Tank in 2015—2019. THINK MAKE TANK is an art tank, an artist collective, a lab, for creating experiences — The tank’s aim is to transform any idea or concept into an accessible experience. Our goal is to incite dialogue and conversation around how we perceive the world. To build a community and think tank for artists recognizing that ‘Making is Thinking.’ Core team Alex Nichols, Mushi Wooseong James, Jorge Bachman, and Magali Charbit.

ALEX: PERSPECTIVES IN PRESENT TENSE. An Artist’s Perspective on Artists. Intimate interviews with female artists about their artistic practices, philosophy, observations and systems. The Artist’s Studio. During the 2014-2015 Mass eviction of Artists from their studios in San Francisco Mission District I was asked to document the community of artists in the 17th and Mission Studios. Conductiing interviews of the artists in their space to give a close look at the communities that were being lost and disbanded by the evictions. There were seventy Artists evicted from Mission 1& Studios. An artists perspective on artists in their studios, their mediums and materials, working methods, observations, systems, philosophies & obsessions. Interviews of Truong Tran, Qinmin Liu, Andy Voight, Katie Nichols, Denise Laws, etc..

ALEX: PERSPECTIVES IN PRESENT TENSE. An Artist’s Perspective on Artists. Intimate interviews with female artists about their artistic practices, philosophy, observations and systems. Bearing witness to a personal canon of International women I am inspired by. Intimate interviews and video blogs. The first three interviews: Viviana Martinez Carlos, Photographer, bookmaker born in Mexico, Nung-Hsin Hu, Multi- disciplinary artsit born in Taiwan, Vanha Lam, painter, sculptor born in USA of vietnamese Immigrants.

The Artist’s Studio. During the 2014-2015 Mass eviction of Artists from their studios in San Francisco Mission District I was asked to document the community of artists in the 17th and Mission Studios. Conductiing interviews of the artists in their space to give a close look at the communities that were being lost and disbanded by the evictions. There were seventy Artists evicted from Mission 1& Studios. An artists perspective on artists in their studios, their mediums and materials, working methods, observations, systems, philosophies & obsessions. Interviews of Truong Tran, Qinmin Liu, Andy Voight, Katie Nichols, Denise Laws, etc..
