Every project has a set of constraints. Alex’s process is based around the constraints she creates. In this project Alex Nichols set herself the task of drawing a portrait everyday for a year. Titled Heteronyms (after Ferando Pessoa’s multiple personas) her question is:

Who am I? Am I the same person everyday? What are the roles I play? Behind these questions are the social and cultural context of being a woman and the roles we each play in our lives. For Alex it is an examination of herself and the conflicts she experiences between her role as a woman, writer, artist, mother and wife.

These are life size charcoal drawings mounted on plywood, something in between drawing and scultpure, standing as individual cutouts that are assembled in various relationships.
