What does it mean to breathe freely?

What does it mean to breathe freely? What are the boxes that contain us? Safety – lack of safety, freedom – suffocation, health – illness. Repeating this action endlessly until we die, breathing in, breathing out. Breath is an invisible action, breath is everything. LUNG uses the structure of the box as a focus on Breath and our relationship to our bodies, our life force, culture and society

Performance and video sound installation.Participatory study of breath. Documenting through sound recordings, video and photography.Video.
First launched at 18th Street Arts Center Residency in Los Angeles in 2021. Continuing durational project.

Procedure:
1. Enter box (Participant is invited into the box to breath)
2. Breathe for five to twenty minutes. ( Allow the body to move with the breath, emphasizing the movement of the lungs.)
3. Share the experience of what it felt like to breathe inside the box. (What thought or state of mind was experienced while breathing.)

Process:
I think about air, about suffocation, about different types of breath. Air, clean air, dirty air, masks, moisture behind a mask, nurses in scrubs, a knee on a man’s neck, the way air can be taken from somebody. Breath accumulates, I think about this simple act of breathing, we do it everyday, every second, this breath is our life, it belongs to us, it is life itself. It can be taken away. Here is my body, my ribcage, my lung, how does this lung work? How can I pay attention to this action, to the significance of this action?
